Pilot dies after falling into water

On the 28th of February, around 0100, the Portuguese maritime pilot, from the Port of Lisbon, Capt. Miguel Conceição died after falling into the water while disembarking from Hong Kong-flagged MV "Singapore Express" in Cascais Bay.

The effort to recover Capt. Miguel Conceição by the pilot boat was hampered by weather with swells reported up to 4 meters. His body was recovered about one hour later with the assistance of Cascais’s lifeboat and pilot boat.

The incident is under investigation.

The Singapore Express was sailing from Lisbon to Tanger-Med in Morocco.

Commenting on the tragedy, President Stein Inge Dahn of the European Maritime Pilots' Association (EMPA) said: “On behalf of all European Pilots, we extend our most sincere condolences to the family of Captain Miguel Conceição and to our colleagues in the Port of Lisbon."

"We also express our gratitude to the Captain and crew of the MV SINGAPORE EXPRESS, the crew of the pilot boat and the first responders for their efforts in trying to save the life of our colleague", said Captain Dahn.
